ScoresThe Malone University men's and women's swimming and diving teams travelled to Meadville, Pennsylvania for a double-dual meet against Allegheny College (PA) and Oberlin College on Saturday afternoon.
The men's team lost by a narrow margin of 132-130 to Allegheny, while the women's team lost 173-112 to Allegheny. The men's team came out victorious against Oberlin, winning by the final score of 165-97, while the women's team suffered a 178-109 loss to Oberlin.
"Our training really peeked over the last couple weeks," commented Malone head coach
Russ Hunt. "It's clear, that we're ready, and earned the rest needed for an important midseason invite meet at Wooster. Watching our teams swim through the challenge this afternoon was very promising, and looking at the scores, we're reminded of how important each and every swim can be."
On the men's side, there were eight first-place finishes, two relays and six individually. For the relays, it was the 200 yard medley relay unit of
Zachary Misak,
Tim Collet,
Florian Zellin, and
Chris Eckard (1:38.41) and the 400 yard freestyle relay unit of Misak, Eckard,
Cory Boogaart, and
Hector Gonzalez (3:13.69). Individually, Misak captured two wins in the 100 yard backstroke (53.50) and in the 200 yard backstroke (2:01.38), Boogaart notched the win in the 200 yard freestyle (1:48.32),
Hector Gonzalez tallied a victory in the 200 yard butterfly (1:59.80), Collet collected the top spot in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:13.09), and Zellin secured the 100 yard butterfly (51.96).
In addition, there were six second-place finishes for the men. Eckard tallied two second-place finishes in the 100 yard freestyle (48.92) and in the 200 yard freestyle (1:49.68), Boogaart grabbed second in the 50 yard freestyle (22.10), Zellin was runner-up in the 200 yard individual medley (2:01.08),
Hector Gonzalez notched second in the 100 yard butterfly (54.48), and
Dan Furno scored a 119.62 in the 1 meter diving.
Marta Jankowska captured three victories and two Top 10 performances on the afternoon. She took home the 200 yard butterfly (2:10.59), 100 yard butterfly (59.85), and the 200 yard individual medley (2:14.71). Her showing in the 100 yard butterfly is now the fourth best time in Malone history while her time in the 200 yard individual medley is ranked eighth on the Pioneers' all-time performance list.
Other victories on the afternoon where
Carolin Friedrich in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:09.04),
Olivia Bently in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:11.41), and
Charis Parker in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:35.35). Parker also placed second in 100 yard breaststroke (1:12.12).
Additional comment from Coach Hunt:
"This group has challenged themselves to get to this point in the process, and both teams will spend the next couple weeks prepping for what will be a great few days to gauge where our training has taken us over the last three months."
The Pioneers will next compete in a three-day College of Wooster Invitational from December 3-5.
