Richard Pittenger was inducted in the Malone Athletic Hall of Fame on February 6, 1988. Pittenger, a 1976 graduate of Malone, was a letterman in track and basketball. In 1975, Pittenger placed second in the discus with a throw of 176'2", a personal best, at the NAIA Track and Field Nationals, and earned All-American honors. He also achieved personal bests, and school records, in shot put (50'2"), and the high jump (6'4"). In addition to being a four-year varsity letterman in track, Pittenger was also a three-year letterman in varsity basketball.
In 1987, he was inducted into the Wayne Russell Hall of Fame for his participation in the Wayne Russell Classic. He competed in all but a few of the classics over seventeen years and won six MVP Weightman Trophies.
