Richard Horton, who graduated in 1975 from Malone, set the standard for track and cross country athletes at Malone. Among his numerous athletic achievements, he became the school's first track All-American (1974). He followed that by receiving All-American honors in 1975, becoming the first Malone athlete to repeat as All-American in any sport.
Up until 2009, Horton still held the school record for the steeplechase with a time or 8:51.5. He was also a member of Malone's highest-finishing cross country teams at the time. He was recognized as the team's top runner when they finished with a National Championship in 1972. He was also the top runner the next year when they finished Runner-Up in 1973, and also when they finished 3rd in 1974.
