Lee Sommers, a 1963 graduate of Malone, served for a total of 12 years as an assistant coach in three sports at Malone from 1980-1992. He coached men’s track and men’s cross country from 1980 to 1985 during which 30 NAIA All-American honors were bestowed on Pioneer athletes in those programs. He also assisted the men’s basketball program from 1985 to 1992 during which the team twice advanced to the NAIA national tournament. Sommers also played basketball for the Pioneers in the 1961-62 season.
Aside from coaching at Malone, Sommers’ most important role at the college is serving as Dean of Admissions in which he has served for over 11 years. During that span, enrollment at the college has to more than doubled (from 770 to 1800).
Sommers and his wife Sue, live in Canton and have three daughters, Lorie, a 1984 Malone graduate, Jody, a 1989 Malone graduate, and Heidi, a Malone senior.
