Ott, a 1981 Malone graduate, was a three-year letterman for the Pioneer baseball team after playing one season at Kent State University-Stark. Playing at shortstop and third base as a sophomore and junior, Ott hit .327 his junior season and then, as a senior rightfielder and eventual team MVP, hit .409 while making just one error during the season. As a senior, he was voted All MOC First Team, All District 22 First Team, All Area 6 First Team and NAIA Honorable Mention All-American. In addition, he played a total of nine seasons of Canton Class A baseball and was a six-time All-Star.

Ott resides in Glendale, Arizona with his wife, Julie, and their two children, Caitlin and Jonathan. Ott is employed by the United States Postal Service.
