Ashton, a 1990 Malone graduate (B.A. in Pre-Med), was a four-year cross country and track & field letterman at the college. A high school cross country standout at Mentor High School, he led his 1985 team to the state title. At Malone, he earned a total of seven NAIA All-American honors in cross country and track & field combined. He also paced Malone cross country to an Ohio Intercollegiate Championship and led the Pioneers to a second and third-place finish at the NAIA National Cross Country Championships. Ashton, who was elected to the Mentor Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998, also has an M.A. in Exercise Physiology from The University of South Carolina 1994.

He and his wife, Heather, reside in Columbia, South Carolina. He is a Physician Assistant at Southern Orthopedic Sports Medicine in Columbia.
