Bender, a 1975 Malone graduate, was a four year letterman in both cross country and track and field at Malone and was a two time NAIA All-American in cross country (1974, 1975).

As a freshman, he was a key member of the 1972 cross country team which won the NAIA national championship, the only Malone team in any sport to (still) to win an NAIA national title. In addition he was a national three mile track and field national finalist.
Bender also has a Masters of Science in Information Systems from  Salve Regina (R.I.) University. He is currently employed as a computer programmer at Salve Regina University. Bender and his wife Susan reside in Newport, Rhode Island.
