David Gramlich begins his third full season on the men's cross country coaching staff this fall and transitions into an administrative role as well, becoming an Assistant Athletic Director in 2020. The Malone alum and Athletic Hall of Fame member returned to the University in January of 2017.
Gramlich, who graduated from Malone in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in Education, spent the previous four years as a member of the track & field coaching staff at the University of Akron. He was the Division I Zips' Director of Operations for track and field from 2012-14 and then served as Akron's head women's cross country coach and recruiting coordinator for the past three seasons.
Prior to joining the Akron coaching staff, Gramlich spent four years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Malone's cross country and track & field programs. His accomplished coaching resume also includes time as the head cross country coach at Ursuline College and as a graduate assistant coach at Malone from 2006-2008.
"To be a part of the 50+ years of tradition that is Malone cross country and track and field has always had a special place in my heart," commented Gramlich. "I am grateful to Malone President Dr. David King, Athletic Director Charlie Grimes and Head Coach Jack Hazen for presenting me with this opportunity to be an integral part of, not only keeping that Malone tradition alive, but to continue building upon it. I'm excited to get to work!"
Gramlich earned an incredible total of 10 NAIA All-America Awards during his time as a Pioneer student-athlete, highlighted by an individual National Championship in the men's marathon at the 2005 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He qualified for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 2008 and was inducted into the Malone Athletics Hall of Fame in February of 2016.
"I am very pleased to have David rejoin our coaching staff," commented longtime Malone University cross country head coach Jack Hazen. "He was a very accomplished athlete here at Malone and now is equally accomplished as a coach and administrator.  We currently have over 50 student-athletes who will compete as cross country or distance runners and, as our teams continue to grow, he will be invaluable as he assists me in our pursuit of excellence in both cross country and track & field."
Gramlich earned an MBA from Malone in 2010. He and his wife, Leta (Huntington), a 2004 Malone graduate who competed for the Pioneer women's soccer and track & field programs, and their two children, Elia (8) and Beckham (6), reside in North Canton.
