At the prestigious Wake Forest University (NC) Open last Friday, Whitaker, a senior from Pittsburgh, PA, won the 3000-meter steeplechase event, among a 23-man field, with an impressive time of 9:11.87, which was not only a personal best for him but also an NCAA Div. II national provisional qualifying time.

In addition, the mark is currently the third best in the nation in Div. II.
