Holly Groff Named Great Midwest Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

Groff joins Rachel Goddard (3x) and Hannah McCue as previous winners of the award.

Malone University sophomore point guard Holly Groff has earned the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week award for the first time in her career following an outstanding two-game homestand in which she led the Pioneers to a pair of crucial victories over Lake Erie and Ursuline.

Groff, a native of Macedonia, Ohio (Nordonia HS), averaged 15.5 points, six assists, four rebounds, and 1.5 steals across the two victories. The 5'4" fearless floor general shot 62.5% (10-16) from the field and 81.8% (9-11) from the free throw line.

In an 86-77 victory over Lake Erie on Thursday, Groff scored 13 points (3-5 FG, 7-9 FT), including 11 in a pivotal second quarter, to go along with six assists, five rebounds, and two steals in 36 minutes. In a 73-62 upset win over second-place Ursuline on Saturday, Groff played all 40 minutes and matched a career-high with 18 points (7-11 FG, 2-2 3PT, 2-2 FT). She added six assists, three boards, and a steal as she helped the Pioneers improve to 6-8 on the season and 4-6 in the G-MAC.

On the year, the 2016-17 G-MAC All-Freshmen Team honoree is averaging 10.1 points per game and ranks 3rd in the G-MAC with 4.3 assists. She is also 7th in the conference in free throws at 79.4% (54-of-68) and leads Malone with 14 steals. Groff is one of two Pioneers to start all 14 games this season and is second on the team in minutes played (31.9 mpg). She has played at least 33 minutes in eight of the last nine games.

Groff and the Pioneers, who have won back-to-back games for the first time this season, will look to make it three straight wins when they travel to Ohio Valley on Monday for a 5:30 pm encounter.
