Malone University senior cornerback and punt returner
Jordan Johnson has been named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season following his outstanding performance in the Pioneers' 24-13 victory over Lake Erie College on Saturday night.
Â
Johnson, of Norwalk, Ohio (Norwalk H.S.), set both the Malone and conference records for longest punt return with an 88-yard touchdown runback in the victory. The second-quarter score put the Pioneers on top 14-10 and proved to be the game-winner as Malone held on to collect its first win of the season. Johnson added a 54-yard kickoff return in the contest and finished the game with 159 total return yards (99 punt, 60 kickoff). He also added five tackles and a pass breakup on defense.
Â
Johnson's punt return touchdown was his second of the season and the third of his career. The senior speedster now has the three longest punt returns in school history. He set the previous mark with a 76-yarder in the 2015 opener against Ohio Dominican. Johnson earned G-MAC Special Teams Player of the Week after returning a punt 70 yards for a touchdown at Taylor in week one of this season. His 88-yard return on Saturday was the fifth longest in NCAA Division II this year. Johnson is one of just seven players in DII with at least two punt return touchdowns.
Â
Malone returns to action this Thursday, October 26th at 7:00 pm when it welcomes the University of Findlay to Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.
