Malone University senior forward
Hannah McCue was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Athlete of the Week after leading the Pioneers to a 2-0 record in the first week of conference play. McCue averaged a double-double (18.0 points, 10.0 rebounds) over the two victories and helped Malone match its win total from a season ago.
Â
In a 77-70 triumph over Alderson Broaddus last Tuesday, McCue recorded her seventh double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and pulling down a season-high 14 rebounds to lead the Pioneers to their first conference-opening victory since the 2006-07 season. She added two assists, a block, and a steal in the Pioneers' road win. The 6'0 forward also knocked down a pair of second-half three-pointers and was a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line.
Â
In Saturday's 73-64 come from behind win over Davis & Elkins, McCue scored 14 of her 19 points in the second half, including 12 points during a brilliant third-quarter stretch in which the Pioneers erased an 18-point deficit. The versatile defender added six rebounds and three steals to boost a Malone defense that held the high-powered Senator offense to just 17 points on 14.8% shooting (4-27) in the second half. McCue netted two more three-pointers and was once again perfect (3-3) at the line.
Â
On the season, McCue ranks 4th in the G-MAC in scoring (15.5 ppg), 2nd in rebounding (9.8 rpg), 2nd in steals (2.1 spg), and 4th in blocked shots (1.3 bpg). She is shooting 40% (26-65) from three-point range and 78.2% (43-55) at the charity stripe. She ranks among the top-10 in the conference in made threes, three-point percentage, and free-throw percentage.
Â
After finishing a 9-18 a season ago, McCue has led Malone to a 9-4 record through 13 games this season and an exhibition win over NCAA DI Bowling Green. The Pioneers will face a challenging road test this weekend when they face Trevecca Nazarene on Thursday, January 12th and 11-1 Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday the 14th.
