Results
The Malone University men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed at the non team-scoring Kent State University Tune-Up meet on Saturday as Pioneer student-athletes grabbed numerous top-ten finishes on the day.
In women's action,
Emily Tomei pocketed the only Malone first-place finish at the meet, among eight runners, in the 1000 meters in a time of 3:01.07 while
Madison Schuler was close behind in fifth in 3:09.53.
In a truly dramatic one-mile race,
Tina Oprean collected a runner-up finish (among 39 entrants) by the smallest possible margin as she was edged by just .01 seconds at the finish line with a time of 5:09.48.
Katie King finished sixth in that race in 5:13.80.
Karli Oprian and
Crystal Barber each earned spots in the 60-meter dash finals (top eight) with fifth and sixth-place finishes, respectively, among a pool of 54 runners in the preliminaries. Then, in the finals, Oprian grabbed a fourth-place finish in a time of 7.81 seconds while Barber crossed the finish line in sixth at 7.85 seconds.
In the 200-meter dash, among 59 sprinters in the field, the 1-2 punch of Barber and Oprian again impressed as Barber took eighth overall in 25.95 seconds while Oprian placed ninth in 26.02.
Mattison Rankin posted a “top-ten” finish in the 800 meters as she finished 10th among 52 runners in a time of 2:19.87.
Courtney Armsey led Malone in the 60-meter hurdle prelims as she crossed the finish line in 11th place, among 40 contestants overall, in 9.30 seconds, coming up a bit short of qualifying for the finals (top eight).
Melissa Wohlheter paced a two-woman Pioneer contingent among the 24 entrants in the 300-meter hurdles as she placed fourth in 46.81 seconds.
Hannah Boss finished ninth in 48.41.
In the high jump,
Tayler Carpenter led Malone with an 11th-place effort, among 37 in the field, with a jump of 5' 0.5”.
In the unseeded pole vault event,
Morgan Kellyy earned a runner-up finish among 17 vaulters as she cleared the bar at an even 10' 0”.
Lyndsey Bates narrowly missed a top-ten finish in the shot put as she heaved the shot a distance of 40' 0.75” to take 11th place among a 62-woman field. Bates did crack the top ten in the weight throw, though, as she tallied a distance of 49' 10” to finish ninth among 56 throwers.
In men's action,
Johnnie Legrair earned one of two Pioneer men's runner-up finishes on the day as he clocked a time of 8.18 seconds in the 60-meter hurdle finals while
Lepear Smith was right behind in third at 8.23. In the prelims of the event, Legrair and Smith both secured one of the eight finals spots, from among 47 entrants, with respective times of 8.26 (3rd) and 8.24 (6th).
Mitch Williams earned the other top Pioneer men's finish on the day with a runner-up placement in the 1000 meters in 2:29.51, just .29 seconds behind the winner in another thrilling multiple-lap race.
Brian Anderson also posted a top-ten finish in the event, placing eighth in 2:34.95 among the 20 runners in the contest.
Among 58 runners competing in the 800-meter race,
Matt Hendrix posted a solid fourth-place finish in 1:53.24 while
Jarod Williams also notched a top-ten finish by taking eighth place in 1:55.58.
Ryan Roush grabbed a seven-place finish in the 3000 meters in 8:32.14 among a 62-man field.
Philip Palmer paced Malone among 26 runners in the 300-meter hurdles as he clocked a time of 40.72 seconds to place eighth among 26 athletes competing in the event.
In men's high jump action,
Anthony Lombardi pocketed a fifth-place finish, among 28 in the field, with a leap of 6' 3.50”.
In the seeded pole vault event,
Ethan Nichols and
Jason Rook both cleared the bar at heights of 14' 11” to earn a tie for sixth-place among 19 vaulters competing.
Mtume Msikizi-Jackson earned a top-ten finish in the triple jump with a tenth-place effort among 19 jumpers with a distance of 42'2”.
The Malone teams will next compete in the GLIAC Indoor Championships in Allendale, Michigan, hosted by Grand Valley State University (MI), February 23-24. Saturday's competition is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. with a Sunday start set for 11:30 a.m.
