Football Preview Notes: Malone at Lake Erie

Series:          Saturday's contest will mark the first-ever meeting between the Pioneers and Storm.

Coaches:   
MaloneEric Hehman is in his third season as the Pioneers' head coach and has tallied an 8-18 record at Malone.  Prior to arriving in Canton, Hehman spent the previous five years as the head coach at NCAA Division III Greenville (IL) College where he led the Panthers to a 28-22 record and a berth in the 2009 NCCAA Victory Bowl.
 Lake ErieMark McNellie is in his fifth season at Lake Erie and has guided the Storm to a 17-33 mark since the program began play in 2008.  In all, McNellie has compiled 24 years of coaching experience, having spent 17 years as an assistant at Mercyhurst (PA) College and two years as an assistant at Fairmont State (WV) University before arriving at Lake Erie.

Coaches Show: In the sixth edition of the show, host Clint Scroggs and coach Hehman discuss last week's game against Walsh and this week's contest against Lake Erie.

Malone Notes – The Pioneers suffered a tough 34-7 loss on the road to local rival Walsh University this past Saturday…After falling behind 21-0 at halftime, Malone got on the scoreboard near the end of the third quarter with a 51-yard touchdown pass…However, Walsh struck back quickly, scoring a pair of rushing touchdowns over the next three minutes to put the contest out of reach…The Pioneers currently rank ninth among the GLIAC's 16 schools in total defense, giving up 386.2 yards per contest….Malone is also currently fifth in the conference against the pass, yielding only 181.4 yards through the air per game...the Pioneers forced three turnovers on Saturday, but also committed five of their own and are now -5 in turnover margin.

Malone players to watch:  RB Malik Felton tallied 88 rushing yards on 15 carries (5.9 average) in last week's game against Walsh…On the year, Felton has gained 310 rushing yards on 59 attempts (4.7 average) with four rushing TD's…He has also caught six passes for 40 yards and one score…QB Will Szpor has completed 55 of 97 (56.7%) passes for 661 yards with four TD's and four interceptions…Through the Pioneers' first five games, Slot Back/WR Justin McLean has posted 15 receptions for 216 yards and three scores…WR AT Turner has also made a significant impact with 17 catches for 186 yards…DB Lloyd Phillips made four tackles and accounted for all three of Walsh's turnovers on Saturday, picking off two passes while also forcing and recovering a fumble on special teams…DB Demarco Donaldson paces the squad and ranks fourth in the GLIAC with an average of 10.8 tackles per game…Donaldson has also broken up three passes and forced two fumbles...LB Antonio Scassa has posted 45 tackles with two tackles for loss and an interception…DL Frank McCormick has tallied 25 tackles, including a team-best six tackles for loss and four sacks.

Lake Erie Notes – The Storm had dropped five straight games to start the year before picking up a 38-35 win at Notre Dame College on Saturday…Lake Erie led 24-14 at intermission and then withstood a strong NDC comeback attempt, pulling ahead for good with a TD run midway through the fourth quarter…The Storm posted 320 yards on the ground in last week's victory and currently rank fifth in the GLIAC in rushing, averaging just over 200 yards per game…Lake Erie has been effective in the red zone this year, notching 14 TDs and three field goals on 20 trips inside its opponents' 20-yard line...However, LEC is also the most penalized team in the conference (90.8 yards per game) and has struggled to shut down opposing offenses, giving up an average of 533.5 total yards and 45.7 points per contest.

Lake Erie players to watch: RB Anthony Bilal has rushed for 100 yards in three of the Storm's last five games, including last week, when he ran 23 times for 192 yards and two TDs…The 192-yard outburst marked a career-high and was the second-highest rushing total in program history…For the season, Bilal has amassed 87 carries for 608 yards and seven touchdowns and currently  ranks second in the GLIAC in yards per game…RB Brandon Phenix has complimented Bilal, posting 356 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 70 carries…Prior to transferring to LEC from the University of Akron, QB Patrick Nicely had started 19 games for the Zips, throwing for 3,358 yards and 18 TDs…In six games this fall for Lake Erie, Nicely has completed 81 of 152 passes (53.3%) for 937 yards, eight TDs and six interceptions…TE Anthony Kukwa, a transfer from Ball State University, is the Storm's leading receiver with 20 catches for 209 yards and four TDs…LB Marcus Rogers leads the way for the Storm defense, ranking ninth in the conference with nine tackles per game…Tanner Wells, who made his first career start at safety last week after switching from his usual linebacker position, earned GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors against NDC after tallying 16 tackles and an interception…Wells also ran a fake punt 48 yards for a touchdown in the victory.
